The south eastern state of Mon is flanked on its western border by the Andaman Sea, by Bago to the north, Kayin to the east and Tanintharyi to the south. Mon State covers 12,296 km2, and consists of 10 townships and Mawlamyine is the capital city. The population is 1.95 million (2023 UNFPA Projections), with a density of 158 people per square kilometre.

Economically, together with neighbouring Tanintharyi Region, Mon State is a major rubber producer, and coastal areas bordering the Gulf of Mottama are part of a wetland ecosystem important for fisheries.

There have been frequent armed clashes in the State since 2021, and the conflict has disrupted the Yangon - Mawlamyine Highway, hindering trade and aid. An estimated 91,600 people were displaced from Mon State as of 11 Aug 2025. The State is also prone to natural disasters and was affected by Typhoon Yagi–related flooding in 2024, with significant road infrastructure exposure (World Bank, Jan 2025). The March 28, 2025 earthquake also caused US$25 million in economic damage in Mon State (World Bank, Apr 2025).
