Ayeyarwady Region, also known as the Delta region, is a coastal region between the Bay of Bengal to the west, and the Andaman Sea to the east. The capital city is Pathein. Sharing a border with Rakhine, Bago, and Yangon, Ayeyarwady Region consists of 26 townships, covering a total of 35,964 km2. Ayeyarwady is Myanmar’s most populated state with an estimated population of 6.25 million (2023 UNFPA Projections) and population density of 173 people per square kilometre. As Myanmar’s "rice bowl", Ayeyarwady is a core rice-producing area and an important aquaculture hub.

The Region, particularly its low-lying coastal areas, is prone to floods and storm surges and was severely affected by Cyclone Nargis in 2008. During the Typhoon Yagi–related flooding in 2024, Thabaung, Nyaungdon, and Pantanaw were among the worst-affected townships, with significant cropland/asset exposure (World Bank, Jan 2025). The Region was also affected by the March 28, 2025 earthquake.
